What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

When you fill in the contact form on our website, we collect the information you provide, including your name and email address. We use this information to respond to your inquiry.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to analyze traffic to our website. Google Analytics does not identify individual users or associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. We use reports provided by Google Analytics to help us understand website traffic and webpage usage.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your personal data with third-party providers, except as necessary to provide services to you. For example, we may share your name and address with a shipping provider to deliver products you purchased from us.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you, except for data that we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data, to request that we restrict the processing of your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority if you believe your rights have been violated.

If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please contact us via our contact page.

Please note that we may need to verify your identity before responding to such requests, and that we may not be able to comply with your request if we are legally required to keep certain information.

Analytics

We use third-party analytics services to help us understand how users interact with our website. These services collect information about your use of our website, including your IP address, the type of device you are using, and the pages you visit. We use this information to improve our website and make it more user-friendly.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your personal data with third parties except as necessary to provide our services or as required by law.

How long we retain your data

We retain your personal data for as long as necessary to provide you with our services and as required by law. If you have an account with us, we will retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

What rights you have over your data

You have the right to access, update, and delete your personal data. If you would like to exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information provided below. Please note that we may need to retain certain information for recordkeeping purposes or as required by law.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. We also use third-party service providers to host and maintain our website and to provide other services, such as email communications and analytics. These service providers may have access to your personal data as necessary to perform their functions, but they are not authorized to use your personal data for any other purpose.

Additional information

We reserve the right to modify this privacy policy at any time, so please review it frequently. Changes and clarifications will take effect immediately upon posting on the website. If we make material changes to this policy, we will notify you here that it has been updated, so that you are aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we use and/or disclose it.

How we protect your data

We take reasonable measures to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. However, no transmission of data over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of your personal data transmitted to our website.

Data breach procedures

In the event of a data breach, we will promptly investigate and take appropriate measures to mitigate the impact of the breach, as required by applicable law.

Third-party data

We may receive data from third-party services, such as social media platforms, as part of our marketing efforts. We may use this data to create a more personalized experience for our users and to better understand their interests and preferences.

Automated decision making and profiling

We do not use automated decision making or profiling with user data.

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements

We comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). If you are a California resident, you may have additional rights under the CCPA. Please see our CCPA Privacy Notice for more information.

Information about how to opt-out of marketing communications should also be included in the privacy policy. This can be done by explaining that users have the option to unsubscribe from marketing emails by clicking on the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of each email. It’s important to note that it may take up to 10 business days for the opt-out request to be processed, during which time users may continue to receive marketing communications.

Unsubscribing from our Email List

Unsubscribing from emails is a simple process that you can initiate at any time. If you wish to unsubscribe from our email list, you can do so by clicking the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any promotional email we send you. If you continue to receive promotional emails from us after 10 business days from your unsubscribe request, please contact us via our contact page so we can investigate and resolve the issue promptly.
