Gardening indoors isn’t easy. There is often a lack of space and light. Hydroponic kits solve that problem by giving you space to grow as well as light to keep your plants healthy. Growing plants hydroponically eliminates all the problems with growing in soil and makes a countertop garden easy to manage.

Here are a selection of small hydroponic kits that will let you grow a small selection of plants, right in your apartment.

AeroGarden Hydroponic Kit

AeroGarden apartment gardening

AeroGarden is a well-known name in the indoor garden world. They have been around for years and they are known for making good quality, small hydroponic indoor gardens. This unit will hold 6 plants at a time up to 12″ tall.

The kit is definitely geared for growing herbs indoors and it even comes with Genovese Basil, Curly Parsley, Dill, Thyme, Thai Basil and Mint seeds as well as enough nutrient mix for your first round of plants.

VegeBox Hydroponics Kit

VegeBox hydroponic indoor growing kit

Not as well known VegeBox has excellent reviews and will hold 12 plants. With this model, you get twice the growing area of the AeroGarden for about the same price. The kit comes with everything you need to get started, with the exception of seeds. With the VegeBox you need to pick your own seeds, but that may be a good thing as it gives you the option of what plants you want to grow in your apartment garden.

My one issue with this style of hydroponic garden is that with the light hinged on one end, you are limited in how you can adjust it. Some plants will inevitably be getting less light than others if you swing it down.

IDEER LIFE Indoor Hydroponic Kit

Back down to a 7 hole countertop hydroponic system with the iDeer Life countertop hydroponic kit. Obviously this isn’t a ‘known name’ in gardening, but it does still have solid reviews. The one really negative review on Amazon states that the instructions suck and it lacked a cover for the filling port. Maybe they were missing a piece as the cover for the filler is shown in the pictures for it.

Another compact design, this time with 10 holes for plants. The Klarstein hydroponic kit is similar in design to the VegeBox and suffers from the same design limitation.

With all of these apartment size, countertop hydroponic gardens, the big limitation is going to be with space. Most are limited to about 12″ between the top of the tray and the lights. This means that despite the pictures showing flourishing tomatoes, they aren’t going to fit unless you get some of the super dwarf tomato varieties.

What these are great for is a few herbs that you use throughout the year though. In addition, they are a starting place for possibly getting into larger indoor hydroponic setups. If you are wanting to experiment in gardening completely indoors, self contained hydroponic kits are a great starting point!
